How to Contact Someone in Prison
This article explains the different ways to contact someone in prison, including in-person visits, phone calls, letters, and professional meetings. It also outlines the rules, requirements, and time limits for each type of communication.

Summary
f you have a loved one or friend in prison, there are different ways you can stay in touch. In this article, we explain the available options and the requirements for each.
In-person visits at the visiting room
One way to communicate in person is through visits at the visiting room of Correctional Centers. Family and friends who have been previously authorized by the inmate can make two weekly visits of 20 minutes each, or one weekly visit of 40 minutes. If the inmate is classified in the third degree, they may receive visits as often as their work schedule allows. If you’d like to learn more about this, you can check the Third Degree section.
To request an appointment, the family member must provide their name, address, ID number, preferred day and time, and their relationship to the inmate. The relationship is verified with the family record book.
Intimate and family visits
For inmates who do not have ordinary leave, there is the option of intimate visits with their partner, held at least once a month, lasting between one and three hours. These take place in rooms designed to ensure privacy. Family visits are also possible, which take place in a specially prepared space, last between one and three hours, and allow a maximum of four family members.
Coexistence visits
Another type of visit is the coexistence visit, which allows children under 10 years old to come along with the inmate’s partner so they can accompany the children. This type of visit can last up to six hours (minimum four) and can take place once every three months.
Phone calls and letters
The inmate can make phone calls, but cannot receive them. The cost of outgoing calls is covered by the inmate. The numbers they call must be previously authorized by the prison, and up to ten numbers can be registered. Inmates may use the phones located in common areas, with a limit of ten calls per week, each lasting a maximum of five minutes.
As for letters, there is no limit on the number of letters inmates may send, but the cost is covered by them. Letters must include the sender’s full name, and they are recorded in a logbook. Incoming letters are opened in the presence of the inmate to ensure they do not contain prohibited items. It is also possible for one inmate to send letters to another.
Up to two packages per month can be delivered to an inmate, weighing up to five kilos each. Books and clothing are not included in this limit.
Communication with lawyers and other professionals
As for communication with lawyers and other professionals, there are no time limits when they visit the inmate in prison.
